Rarely offered in the DFW MSA:

Charles Hollis Jones, born in 1945 in Bloomington, Indiana, began designing cars at age 8 and cabinets for his parents’ house at age 14, teaching himself how to translate a design from paper to a finished product. At 16 he founded CHJ Designs and began selling his work to department stores. The first of these, Bullocks Department Store in Los Angeles, purchased small tables, mirrors, wastebaskets and display cabinets.

Hollis Jones’ innovative work has attracted a prestigious roster of public and private clients, including the Hotel Le Mondrian, Bijan Fragrances, Bank of America, Hyatt Regency Hotels and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, among many others. Renowned architect John Lautner was so impressed with the designs that he often referred his clients to Hollis Jones to create their furniture and accessories. A "designer’s designer," Hollis Jones also received numerous commissions from Herbert Bayer, Raymond Loewy and Paul Laszlo.

Hollis Jones’ Beverly Hills showroom also attracted the attention of the Hollywood elite. Patrons of Hollis Jones have included Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Diana Ross, Lucille Ball, Johnny Carson and Tennessee Williams, to name a few.

Over the past 40 years, Hollis Jones’ exploration of acrylics and metal has attracted international recognition and garnered numerous awards. In the early 1970’s, his "Edison Lamp," made of Lucite and metal and using Edison bulbs, won an award in the California Design 11 competition, won the certificate of "Brilliance in Design" from the German Government, and was placed in the former Pasadena Museum of Modern Art (now the Norton Simon Museum) along with his folding tables and étagère. In 1976, Hollis Jones received an award from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for his "Metric Line" tables. In 1992, he accepted the Carl Beam Sculpture Award from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

Charles Hollis Jones is still designing in Los Angeles.
